Nervous About Your First Consultation? Here's What Happens
By Romani Roots Skincare & Herbal Remedies | October 23, 2026
If you’re nervous about a first time consultation, you’re not alone. People tell me they’re worried they’ll be judged for their skin, told to buy a shelf of products, or left more confused than when they walked in. That’s not how I work. I’m known for being understanding, gentle, and detail-oriented, and I take the time to actually listen before I ever suggest a plan.
A Consultation at Romani Roots is a dedicated, 60-minute appointment for talking through your skin history, your current routine, and what you’re realistically hoping to change. I’ll do a close visual look at your skin, and if it makes sense, I may suggest a small patch test. You’ll leave with clear recommendations, a rough timeline, and cost options so you can decide on next steps with confidence, without committing to a full treatment that day.
Your skin consultation checklist (so I don’t have to guess)
The best consults are the ones where you don’t try to remember everything on the spot. If you can, bring a quick list, or just screenshots on your phone, of what you use regularly.
Bring or list: your skincare products (including actives like retinol, acids, benzoyl peroxide), supplements, medications, topical prescriptions, and any herbal remedies you’re already taking.
If you’re not sure of exact names, photos of labels help. And tell me what you’ve tried that didn’t last, especially if you’ve dealt with long-term acne, rosacea, or irritation.
Come with a bare face if you can
No makeup is ideal because it lets me see your skin clearly right away. If you’re coming from work in San Francisco or you’re popping in around the Castro, don’t stress. I can still do an accurate assessment, and we’ll work with what you’ve got.
Inside the 60-minute Consultation: the actual flow, step by step
When you arrive, I’ll get you settled and we’ll start with a few straightforward intake questions. If you’re a shy person, that’s completely fine. People have told me they felt comfortable and safe quickly, and that’s exactly what I want for you too.
Then we’ll go through your routine in plain language. I’ll ask what you use morning and night, what you skip when you’re tired, and what you’ve been tempted to try next. I’ll also ask about recent skin changes and lifestyle factors that show up on the face: sleep, stress, diet, transit exposure, and anything that’s shifted recently. If you commute up the 101 corridor from Daly City, South San Francisco, San Bruno, Brisbane, or Colma, that day-to-day environment matters more than most people realize.
After we talk, I’ll do a close visual assessment. This is not a harsh, bright-light interrogation. It’s careful and specific. I’m looking at congestion patterns, redness, texture, dehydration, and how your skin seems to react. If you’ve struggled with things like cystic acne or rosacea, I’m paying attention to triggers and to what your skin might tolerate next, so we don’t repeat the same cycle of flare-ups.

If a patch test is a smart move, I’ll explain why and where, and we’ll keep it small. It’s not automatically part of every first time consultation. It’s a tool I use when skin is reactive, when someone has a history of irritation, or when we’re considering an ingredient you haven’t used before.
Before you leave, I’ll lay out a stepwise plan. That usually includes which service on my menu makes sense first and what order to approach things in. I’ll also give you options. Some people want the simplest routine possible, and others want a more involved plan. Either way, you’ll understand the “why” behind what I’m recommending.
After your consult: what you’ll notice, plus easy follow-through
A consult isn’t a full facial, but it often comes with relief. People walk out feeling lighter because there’s finally a plan, not a pile of guesses. And if we do a patch test, you might have a small spot that looks slightly pink for a short time. I’ll tell you exactly what’s normal and what would be a reason to check back in.
Your follow-through usually falls into two buckets: what you keep doing, and what you pause. If your routine is overloaded, we’ll simplify it. More than one person has told me their routine got simpler and their results got better, and that’s a pattern I see a lot when skin is inflamed or sensitized.
My general rule: don’t start three new actives at once after your consultation. We’ll introduce changes in a way your skin can actually tolerate, especially if you’re acne-prone or rosacea-prone.
If you want extra context before you come in, I wrote up why a consult saves time and money in this consultation guide. It’s especially helpful if you’ve bounced between products or appointments and still feel stuck.
Castro District consult timing tips (and a few things I wish everyone knew)
Here’s a detail I don’t think enough places say out loud: you don’t need to “earn” help by having perfect skin hygiene or a perfect routine. If you’re overwhelmed, that’s exactly who a consultation is for. I’d rather see the reality of what you’re using and how often you’re using it, so I can give you advice you’ll actually follow.
If you’re in the Castro District or Eureka Valley, a 60-minute consult fits nicely into real life. People often book around their day, like stopping in before a Castro Theatre screening or after brunch and shopping on 18th Street. And yes, Market Street Muni riders, you can keep this quick and efficient without it feeling rushed.

If you want your consultation to feel even easier, jot down your top three questions before you arrive. Patch testing, costs, follow-ups, contraindications, and what order to do services in are all fair game. I’ll answer you directly, and I’ll never push you into a one-time fix. Skin changes best when we take it step by step.
Ready for a clear plan (without committing to a full treatment)?
If you’ve tried a lot and the results didn’t last, or you just want a calm, focused hour to talk through your skin, a Consultation is usually the best first step. It’s 60 minutes, $80, and it’s built for questions.
Call +14159028336 or email sandor124@gmail.com, and tell me what you’re hoping to change. If you’re coming in from around San Francisco, or commuting in from Daly City or South San Francisco, I’ll help you pick a consult time that feels doable.
